WOMAN AT THE WELL
JOHN Chapter 4 verses 1-15; 27 - 30; 39 - 42
THE WAY
Jesus goes to Galilee in the north, via Samaria, rather than the longer route up the Jordan valley.
History: 700 years before, Samaria was defeated and exiled. Other peoples were brought in to replace the exiles. (2 Kings 17 v 6,24,26,29) (Ezra 4v 1,9,10).
There was an acceptance of the Pentateuch, but there were other gods worshipped as well. There was expectancy that that the Messiah would make his seat of government in Samaria.
Note, Jesus goes ‘another way’ and shows a Woman ‘God's way’ ‘How many have been led in ‘other ways’ to work out God’s purposes!
Note, the hostility of the Jews and the readiness of the Samaritans to accept the message Jesus brought.
(See also, Acts 8). The gospel is universal, not limited to the Jewish nation.
THE WELL
The reality of His humanity - tired and thirsty and His divinity - perfect knowledge of the woman’s history - is revealed.
Jacob's Well still exists, at the foot of Mt. Ebal, Sychar is now, Askar. ( Note, Jacob’s purchase of land - Genesis 33 v 19).
Instead of the Old Order, the New order is proclaimed! It is ‘Living Water’ given by Jesus to those who believe.
THE WOMAN
She did not seek Him; He sought her (6 v 44)
Not an accidental meeting (Genesis 37 v 28; Exodus 2 v 5).
He is not too weary to speak to a sinful soul. Jews had no dealing with the Samaritans! She did not see beyond the fact that he was a Jew - this, the Lord of Glory! He speaks of the ‘Gift of God’. ‘Living water’ brings eternal life. (v 14).
It is satisfying (v 15).
Refreshing. (14).
Lasting (14).
