When my sister was quite young and put early to bed, my parents would ensure that the landing light was left on for her, and then when they thought she had gone to sleep, switched off the light from the hallway below, only to hear from the bedroom above the plaintive cry of Margery, saying
“Leave the light not dark, cos I’ll go to sleep”.! That is what this Emmaus road disciples wanted -- the” light not dark”!
“Death places a question mark against all our certainties”. It is surely a picture we see on the Emmaus road, of two disciples, village-bound, after the devastating event of Christ crucified at Calvary. “Death places a question mark against all our certainties”.
